Sudan update for supporters: Championing Education Amidst Conflict

At Windle Trust International we are deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the devastating impact on its people, especially its adverse effects on education. Schools and universities are closed, and the war has displaced countless individuals, further exacerbating the already significant barriers to education in the region.

However, even in the face of these daunting challenges, we remain steadfastly committed to our mission, and to Sudan. Our experience of Education in Emergencies has taught us the vital role of education in fostering peace, resilience, and recovery in conflict-affected regions. Now more than ever, we believe in the power of education to transform lives and build communities.

Children affected by conflict risk missing out on vital education. At Windle Trust International, we work to ensure that this doesn’t happen, breaking the cycle of poverty for generations.

We are firmly committed to ensuring that the children and young adults of Sudan do not fall victim to an education gap because of the conflict and are working to ensure that Sudanese nationals, refugees, and other marginalized individuals in the region continue to have access to quality education, despite the escalating conflict.

We are pleased to report that, as of now, all our staff and students in Sudan are safe and well. The majority of our staff and students are now outside of Khartoum and have moved to areas of relative safety. We remain in contact with all staff and are working to re-establish communications with all students. We believe that their wellbeing is of paramount importance and will take all necessary steps to ensure their continued protection.

With the ongoing fighting in Khartoum, all our work with scholars across 42 universities, colleges and seven refugee community schools in Khartoum has been suspended. Our operations in the Blue Nile region of Sudan however have continued as we continue to support schools and Ethiopian refugees in Camp6, and the delivery of education to Internally Displaced People and host communities in the Kurmuk and Geissan localities of Blue Nile State. We are also monitoring the influx of Sudanese refugees into South Sudan and the thousands of South Sudanese returnees arriving from Sudan in Renk.

We would like to thank all our supporters who have stood with us in these difficult times. Your belief in our mission and your continued support have been instrumental in our work. We are motivated by our shared commitment to education and the belief that every individual deserves the chance to learn, grow, and contribute positively to their community.

We remain hopeful for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan and will continue to advocate for the rights and opportunities of all those affected by it. As always, we are committed to ensuring that education remains accessible to all, regardless of the circumstances because education cannot wait for the conflict to end.

Thank you for standing with us as we continue this vital work.
