New Chapter in Somaliland for WTI

WTI is set to launch its educational programmes in Somaliland in 2024, marking our first expansion into a new country since 2006. This significant venture underscores our enduring commitment to fostering educational opportunities in regions affected by conflict and poverty.

Central to this new chapter are strategic partnerships with the Pharo Foundation, as well as with Edna Adan University. These collaborations embody a shared vision for enhancing educational access and quality in Somaliland. With approval from the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Planning and National Development, these partnerships signify not only a new geographical milestone for WTI but also a deepened commitment to working hand-in-hand with local institutions, aligning with community needs and aspirations. As we embark on this exciting journey, our focus remains steadfast on empowering individuals and communities through tailored educational programs, underpinned by a spirit of mutual learning and growth.

Continuing our Strategy

WTI’s expansion is the continuation of a long-term strategic plan to bring improvements in educational access and quality to conflict-affected and other marginalised people in East Africa. Proposals for WTI’s operations in Somaliland began in 2017 with needs assessment and fact-finding missions. Despite being delayed by the outbreak of COVID-19, we have been making steady progress since and were delighted by the invitation of Edna Adan Ismail in 2023 to develop a strategic partnership.

Our independent sister-organisation and long-term partner Windle International began operations in Somalia in 2018 and currently manage the UNHCR DAFI programme there.

WTl’s Experience

Having worked in Sudan since the 1990s and South Sudan since 2006, WTI has developed rich experience of working with conflict affected communities to develop and improve education, and look forward to bringing this experience to Somaliland. In 2023 alone, WTI's impact in Sudan and South Sudan was substantial. We supported 68,427 girls to remain in school, which is crucial considering the significant gender disparities in education in these regions. Additionally, we trained 9,419 teachers and supported 558 scholarships. This effort is part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of education and ensuring that it is accessible to all. Our support extended to 1,077 primary and secondary schools across Sudan and South Sudan, reaching a total of 516,387 school children.

The Need in Somaliland

In Somaliland, educational needs are shaped by several challenges. A key issue is the language barrier, as English proficiency is vital for global integration yet remains limited among teachers and students. Additionally, access to education in rural areas is restricted, and there is a scarcity of resources and trained educators. Addressing these challenges is essential to enhance educational outcomes and foster overall development in the region.

Our Collaboration

Our initial project in Somaliland focuses on enhancing the English language skills of teachers and students. This initiative is pivotal for integrating the region globally and improving educational outcomes. The project includes strategies like teacher training, curriculum support, and community engagement. Collaborations with local institutions, such as Edna Adan University, form a crucial part of this effort. This approach aims to empower educators, address resource constraints, and overcome rural education access challenges, fostering economic growth and development in Somaliland.

We will also be supporting the provision of scholarships. These scholarships are vital in providing access to quality education for those who may otherwise be unable to afford it, particularly focusing on individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our scholarships experience tells us that by offering scholarships, we are able to directly contribute to the educational advancement of individuals, which in turn has a positive ripple effect on their communities.

Empowering the Future

As we embark on this journey in Somaliland, the future holds a vision of transformative education and community uplifting. Building upon our extensive experience in Sudan and South Sudan, we are poised to address the unique educational challenges in Somaliland. Through enhancing English language skills, providing scholarships, and collaborating with local and regional partners like the Pharo Foundation and Edna Adan University, our aim is to bridge educational gaps and foster inclusive growth. This expansion is more than just geographical; it represents a deepened commitment to empowering conflict-affected communities with the tools for sustainable development and a brighter future.
