Building Future Leaders: A Glimpse into the WTI Summer Conference 2023

In a display of collaboration and growth, the Postgraduate Programme scholars of Windle Trust International (WTI) recently came together for the WTI Summer Conference in the historic city of Oxford. From the 1st to the 2nd of July 2023, these dedicated individuals, supported by WTI for their Master's degrees in various locations across the United Kingdom, gathered to strengthen connections, cultivate inspiration, and deepen their bonds.

Scholars, Senior Management and Trustees discussed concepts of leadership and their own personal impact as leaders

The conference began on Saturday the 1st of July, kicking off with a comprehensive leadership programme facilitated by Heather Wickes from Connect Oxford. The scholars built upon their previous experiences in engaging workshops that delved into the complexities of effective leadership, exploring different styles and sharpening their self-awareness. These sessions provided opportunities to examine how their actions and words could align with their core principles, thereby endorsing a values-centric model. With a unique blend of technical expertise and a strong moral compass, the participants were equipped to make a lasting impact in their communities. Through dynamic discussions, they gained valuable insights into the importance of integrity in leadership and its potential to incite meaningful change in their respective fields.

The conference was not just about leadership; it also gave scholars a glimpse of Oxford's culture. On Sunday, the 2nd of July, they went on a guided tour of the city. They discovered its rich history, vibrant academic environment, and impressive architecture. A visit to Exeter College, a well-known part of Oxford University, highlighted its long tradition of academic achievement and deep thinking. The conference also helped the scholars bond. They took part in fun activities like "punting", a popular pastime in Oxford where you navigate a flat-bottomed boat with a long pole along the river. This punting trip was not just a fun, relaxing experience; it was also a part of Oxford's tradition, making their bonding time more memorable. These shared experiences brought the scholars closer together, creating a support network that extends across different countries and encourages collaboration.

The retreat was a key moment in the scholars' journey, emphasising the importance of teamwork, shared goals, and personal development. By hosting the conference in Oxford, WTI showed its dedication to helping build a community of future leaders ready to drive positive change in East Africa. As the conference ended, the scholars left Oxford with new determination and stronger connections. With improved leadership skills, cultural insights, and new friendships, they returned to their study locations across the UK, ready to tackle their next challenges. The conference in Oxford demonstrated WTI's ongoing commitment to empowering scholars and fostering academic excellence. It was a vital platform for collaboration, inspiration, and cultural learning, sparking continued growth among the scholars and their commitment to making a difference in their home countries.
